Spielberg returns to aliens in Day of Disclosure

The film ‘Day of Disclosure’ by Steven Spielberg has been released worldwide. In it, the director returns to the subject of extraterrestrial life, but the result has received mixed reactions from critics.

The plot centers on cybersecurity expert Daniel Kellner, who steals secret government videos showing close encounters with aliens. Kellner wants to release them, but his girlfriend Jane opposes this. Meanwhile, TV anchor Margaret Fairchild, after seeing a mysterious red bird, gains the ability to speak any language and telepathically connects with Kellner. Their actions are opposed by Kellner’s former boss, Noah Scanlon, who leads a team of agents to stop the leak.

Spielberg has long been associated with the modern portrayal of aliens, having directed classics such as ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ and ‘E.T.’. His later ‘War of the Worlds’ showed a darker side, but generally the director favors benevolent extraterrestrials and believes that humans are the ones complicating matters.

The inspiration for ‘Day of Disclosure’ came from a New York Times article about a secret Pentagon UFO program. Ironically, Spielberg’s own earlier films helped shape the public’s fascination with such conspiracies, so in a sense he draws from his own legacy.

Like ‘Close Encounters’, the new movie focuses more on the concept of secrecy and different attitudes toward it than on the aliens themselves. The decision to keep the central mystery unsolved is meant to provoke thought, but many viewers find it unsatisfying.

The screenplay was written by David Koepp, a longtime Spielberg collaborator who worked on ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘War of the Worlds’, and the recent ‘Indiana Jones’ film. Koepp is known for straightforward, optimistic stories, but ‘Day of Disclosure’ attempts to combine paranoid thriller, philosophical discourse, and sentimental message. This combination has been criticized for not fully succeeding in any aspect.

The film opens with a well-executed but old-fashioned chase scene. However, when characters deliver lengthy dialogues about truth and faith, the momentum slows. The inclusion of computer-animated talking animals as allies of the aliens gives the movie a fantastical, fairy-tale quality. Additionally, the entire conspiracy background is revealed early, leaving little room for suspense.

Despite these issues, the cast delivers notable performances. Emily Blunt stands out as the TV anchor, displaying an intensity that may earn awards attention. Josh O’Connor appears puzzled, Eve Hewson is highly emotional, and Colin Firth brings a villainous edge to his character.

The emotional core, driven by Spielberg’s characteristic sentimentality and John Williams’ score, tends to overshadow the action and conspiracy elements. The promotional campaign led many to expect a deeper revelation, but the final payoff feels anticlimactic in an era of digital fakes.

Overall, ‘Day of Disclosure’ fails to live up to the high expectations set by Spielberg’s previous works and its own marketing. The director’s attempt to deliver a message about truth and empathy gets lost in a muddled script.
